The “Piyawara – A Step Towards Nature” project, organized by the Sri Lanka Scout Association Messengers of Peace national team and the Sri Lanka Scout Association Anuradhapura District Branch, took place during this year’s National Poson Festival. The project focused on recycling plastic bottles and was held on June 21, 22, and 23 at Anuradhapura Sacred City, Thanthirimale, and Mihintale.

Nearly 400 scouts from the Sri Lanka Scout Association Anuradhapura District Branch, along with members of the Sri Lanka Queens and Presidents Scout Guild, the Association of Top Achievers Scouts (ATAS), and others, contributed approximately 2,700 man-hours to this initiative. The scouts collected nearly 40,000 plastic bottles, which were subsequently handed over to recycling centers.

The opening ceremony featured a virtual connection via Zoom with the Chief Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Scout Association, Attorney-at-law Mr. Janaprith Fernando, and the Anuradhapura District Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Scout Association, Mr. Sumith Amarathunga, from the World Scout Bureau in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Additionally, Asia Pacific Scout Regional Sub-Committee Member, Sri Lanka Scout Association Headquarters Commissioner, Messengers of Peace Sri Lanka Coordinator, and ATAS Sri Lanka Coordinator Mr. Jerome Lakshan Perera, Sri Lanka Queens and Presidents Scouts Guild President Captain (Retired) Gayan Withanage, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Queens and Presidents Scouts Guild, Assistant Headquarters Commissioner Mr. Amal Raj, Chairperson of Anuradhapura District Branch Executive Committee Dr. Tekla, and other resource persons attended the ceremony. The event was held near the Anuradhapura Thupararama Shrine, with the participation of scouts and their parents.
