The 42nd World Scout Conference opened on 25th August 2021 on the virtual platform at 5.30 p.m. SL time presided over by the three co-chairs Param Palany of Malaysia, Djuna Bernad of Luxembourg, and Mohamed mar of Egypt.
They welcomed the World Scout Committee and the 2286 participants from 170 NSOs including the three new NSOs. The Opening was marked by lighting the Campfire and the Renewal of the Scout Promise led by the Chairman of the World Scout Committee Mr. Craig Turpie.
Tributes were paid to all officials who have gone home followed by a moment of silence. Chairman of World Scout Committee Craig Turpie and Secretary-General Ahmad Alhandawi presented the presented the triennial report along with visual and video presentations. Tellers and the Resolutions Committee were elected by virtual voting.
Secretary-General declared the membership growth as 57 million. He further stated that during the pandemic they delivered activities. 16,000 zoom meetings were held, Five task forces functioned and Ethics Committee prepared the code of conduct.
He said Safe from Harm should be the key priority for the next millennium. 100 day Emergency Response was initiated for the pandemic. He concluded by saying “We are growing stronger together”.
The plenary session was brought to a close and Breakout sessions continued. The Sri Lankan delegation of 20 including the 2 youth forum delegates participated.
The Conference continues till 29th August.
