Formed in 1961, the Sri Lanka Fellowship of Former Scouts and Guides has a history of over 56 years. Presently it is known as the Sri Lanka Scouts and Guides Fellowship (SLSGF). SLSGF is a full member of the International Scouts and Guides Fellowship (ISGF).
The Vision of the ISGF (The World Body) is to promote the spirit of the Scout and Guide Promise and Law in its individual members’ daily lives by continuing personal development, serving the community and actively supporting the World Associations of Scouts and Guides and the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
BACK TO SCOUT/GUIDE SPIRIT
The members of the Trefoil Guild (Girl Guides) with some members from the Sri Lanka Scout Association formed a Fellowship of Former Scouts and Guides National Joint Council in the year 1961. It was affiliated to the former International Fellowship of Former Scouts and Guides (IFOFSAG) the world body in the same year 1961. Members of the Fellowship of Former Scout and Guides National Joint Council in Sri Lanka were invited for the Inaugural meeting of the IFOFSAG and three members were elected to serve on the IFOFSAG Committee. Since then most of the members of the Fellowship of Former Scouts and Guides have attended World Conferences Regional Meetings, Gatherings etc. Presently the IFOFSAG is known as the International Scouts and Guides Fellowship (ISGF).
ISGF is the Governing body based in Brussels and over 60 countries are members. The World Conference is the General Assembly of the ISGF. It is held in once in three years. SLSGF belongs to the Asia Pacific Region. The World Committee organizes activities such as the World Conferences, Regional Gatherings, Regional Conferences, workshops, seminars on various subject for members of the National Committees.
The Secretary General of the Asia Pacific Region (AsPac) of the International Scouts and Guides Fellowship (ISGF) Mr. M.A.K. Mecci noticing that the Fellowship of former Scouts and Guides was not actively functioning in Sri Lanka, made many visits to Sri Lanka and met with the officials of the Guides and Scouts Associations and took the initiative to reorganise the Scouts and Guides Fellowship. Accordingly, the Sri Lanka Scout and Guide Fellowship (SLSGF) was reactivated and the inaugural meeting was held on on 12 May 2016. Founders of SLSGF are the Trefoil Guild Girl Guides Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Queen’s and President’s Scouts Guild. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Roof Top of the Hedges Court Residences, Colombo 2. The Chief Guest was Justice Kalpesh Jhaveri, National President of the Indian SGF. The Guest of Honour was Mr. M.A.K. Mecci, Secretary General AsPac Scouts and Guides Fellowship Committee. Mr. Simon Rhee, Chairman of Korean NSGF Interim Committee and Ms. Munira Mistry International Secretary, Indian SGF, Ms. Yasmin Raheem, Chief Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association and Prof. Nimal de Silva Chief Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Scout Association graced the occasion. A large gathering of Scouts and Guides attended the meeting. Five members each from the Trefoil Guild and Sri Lanka Queen’s and President’s Scouts Guild were appointed to serve on the Executive Committee of the Sri Lanka Scout and Guide Fellowship.
The members of the SLSGF have opportunities to attend International Events such as Conferences, Workshops, Seminars Gatherings, Camps and various other Events. A contingent of over 11 members from Sri Lanka participated at the 14th AsPac Gathering that was held at Bangalore, India in 2015. Two members from SLSGF attended the AsPac Development Workshop which was held in Malaysia in January 2017. Opportunities are vast. Two members from the SLSGF are due to attend the World Conference in Bali, Indonesia from 9 – 14 October, 2017. Singapore Trefoil Guild is hosting “Bridges 2017” for adult Scouts and Guides from 26 – 28 October 2017 and any Guide/Scout over 18 and under 75 years are invited for this event.
There are many activities that we can do to promote the aims and objectives of the ISGF. For this we need all our past Guides and Scouts over 18 years of age to join this adult organization to bring the Guide/Scout spirit back in you. If we all join together and put into practice what we learnt being a Scout/Guide (what Lord Baden-Powell taught us) we can do many vibrant things to make this society a better place to live in.
